GREAT LAKES
Welcome to the Great Lakes.
The Great Lakes are an incredible creation of mother nature - over a million years ago by the movement of huge glaciers,
which later melted, creating the world's largest system of fresh surface water - the Great Lakes.
The five Great Lakes contain 18 percent of the world and about 90 percent of the U.S. water supply. The great lakes hold
5,500 cubic miles, or 6 quadrillion gallons, and span more than 94,000 square miles. If spread evenly across the contiguous
48 states, the great lakes water would be about 9.5 feet deep. Only the polar ice caps contain more fresh water.
In volume, of the 5 great lakes, Lake Superior is the largest, also the deepest and coldest. Lake Michigan, the second
largest, is the only Great Lake entirely within the United States, making it one of the earth's most magnificent
treasures. Lake Huron, which includes Georgian Bay, is the third largest by volume.
Lake Erie is the smallest. Lake Ontario, although slightly smaller in area, is much deeper than its upstream neighbor,
Lake Erie.
When the last glaciers melted more than ten thousand years ago, they left behind a fabulous legacy: the Great Lakes.
Over the centuries, the great lakes - which contain more than one-fifth of the world's standing fresh water - have fascinated
humankind. Voyageurs and homesteaders, poets and storytellers, missionaries and mapmakers, Native Americans and pioneers have
all been drawn to the timeless beauty of the region.
